Apply thin-set mortar to the substrate and/or onto KERDI-BOARD with a notched trowel. The mortar must bond to the substrate and mechanically anchor the fleece on the KERDI-BOARD surface. KERDI-BAND is also suitable for sealing connections to fixed building elements such as door and window frames. Where these surfaces will not accept a bond to Schluter-SET, Schluter-ALL-SET, Schluter-FAST-SET, or unmodified thin-set mortar, use KERDI-FIX to bond KERDI-BAND. Almost forgot, I did place a small piece of KERDI-BOARD adjacent to the tub just like on the plumbing wall.

Prepare the odor trap, cut section of pipe, and KERDI-DRAIN with cleaner, primer and ABS or PVC cement per the solvent cement manufacturer's instructions and connect. Use a no-hub coupling for stainless steel drains with no-hub outlets, and thread sealing compound or tape for stainless steel drains with threaded outlets.Apply a minimum of 5" (125 mm) of Schluter SET™, ALL-SET™, FAST-SET™, or unmodified thin-set mortar to the KERDI-BOARD using the KERDI-TROWEL or a 1/4" x 3/16" (6 mm x 5 mm) V-notched trowel. Use KERDI-FIX to completely fill the 1/4" (6 mm)-wide gap between the KERDI-BOARD and tub. If you have to cut a KERDI-BOARD to size on the stud just make sure the board only covers half the stud's width. That way you can place the adjacent board on the stud (this is similar to drywall work).

Once the assembly has been set and grouted, remove the tile spacer and insert the tiled covering support in the lateral adjustment ring. Once the top pieces of KERDI-BOARD were installed flush with the ceiling I had to add the bottom boards.

Final Thoughts

I secured the board to studs using the same specifications that were used for the main wall, i.e. every 10-12 inches along the stud and 3 inches up from the tub lip. DITRA or DITRA-XL is installed up to the outer edge of the KERDI-DRAIN bonding flange. Apply Schluter SET®, Schluter ALL-SET®, Schluter FAST-SET®, or unmodified thin-set mortar to the mortar bed surrounding KERDI-DRAIN with a 1/4" x 3/16" (6 x 5 mm) V-notched trowel or the DITRA-TROWEL, which features an 11/64" x 11/64" (4.5 x 4.5 mm) square-notched design. The thin-set mortar must be mixed to a fairly fluid consistency, but still able to hold a notch. Solidly embed the matting into the bond coat using a float, screed trowel, or DITRA-ROLLER. Position KERDI-BOARD on the framing and press a washer into the board every 12 inches up the stud location.
