The Boulder Mountain cinquefoil ( Potentilla angelliae) is a rare species of plant that is endemic to Boulder Mountain. Due to increased popularity and pressure from their record label 4AD, the band agreed on the creation of a music video for "Carolyn's Fingers". On the other hand, its general dismissal by critics and fans as a lesser Cocteau Twins album may have less to do with the album itself and more to do with the fact that it is bookended by better and more ecstatically creative works. There are moments of disarming beauty on Blue Bell Knoll—the melting keyboards on “ Cico Buff”, the lush vocal layering of “ Athol-Brose”, the shooting-stars opening of “ A Kissed Out Red Floatboat”, Raymonde’s syncopated bass trudge of “ The Itchy Glowblo Blow”, the whatever that is at the end of “ Spooning Good Singing Gum” (I think it might be a herd of lovelorn goats playing saxophones). But the standout is “ Carolyn’s Fingers”, which would become the Cocteau Twins’ first American single. The band never utilized its rhythm section to better effect: Against Guthrie’s crisp guitar line, that churning momentum pushes Fraser’s vocals to greater and greater heights, her unexpected swoops and eloquently rolled consonants creating a bewildering indie-pop aria. Blue Bell Knoll was the only Cocteau Twins LP to be released commercially in DAT format (and was the only 4AD release to ever appear in that format). Grant took particular interest in the Cocteaus' song titles, asking Fraser to explain Blue Bell Knoll's. 'Athol-brose' is named after the Scottish drink, "whiskey and honey… I'd had quite a lot of that…" the singer revealed, while of 'A Kissed Out Red Floatboat', she said: "I remember I felt love, a really intense love, I was romanticising about it, a romantic image of being open and having your heart open."

Ella Megalast Burls Forever, meanwhile, was written in tribute to the mother of bandmate Robin Guthrie. "She was quite a big woman, in terms of personality as well as physique, and she was very jolly and nimble; even though she was a big lady there was something very delicate about her. I just had this image of her revolving, and this going on and on forever and ever, eternally. And so she should!" Robin was deeply into the production side and he always had a brilliant film score playing in his head of what we should sound like. I learned a lot from him, but mostly that it was better to try it out for yourself than pay someone else to do it who couldn’t possibly know what you wanted that sound to be.

You don't hike Bluebell Knoll for the sheer challenge and exhilaration of summiting a lofty peak. As its name implies, it is a knoll, not a peak and is barely higher than the surrounding landscape. Bluebell Knoll is one of the easiest of the county high points in Utah. The area around Bluebell Knoll, the Aquarius Plateau, however, is incredibly scenic.
