Geneva, Switzerland: IEC. The KW32 Kimwipes Tissues are durable, low-lint sheets and are appropriate for cleaning optical fiber connectors between polishing steps. Please note that Kimwipes are sold in cases, with 12 boxes per case and 280 Kimwipes per box, and partial cases cannot be provided. Kimwipes are not ideal for cleaning optics. Instead, we recommend using the MC-5 lens tissues (sold below) to clean optics. There are as many different cleaning techniques as there are fiber optic network technicians. While some techniques work some of the time, reliable and lasting performance of your fiber links require inspection and proper cleaning processes with every mating. Here are some well-known bad habits:

Do not tilt, angle, or slant the cleaner while inserting the tip into the adapter. Do not use excessive force during insertion as this may damage the connector and/or cleaner. If resistance is experienced while pushing the cleaner body toward the adapter, remove the cleaner tip from the adapter and inspect for contamination on the tip and in the adapter.A major telecom company found that 16 percent of connectors in their fiber-to-the-home network was sufficiently contaminated to cause performance problems (Sheedy, 2014)

Fiber optic lint-free foam swabs are ideally suited for cleaning contamination from 1.25mm or 2.5mm fiber adapters and connectors. 1.25mm and 2.5mm foam swabs are all made of polyester and polyurethane. These small foam swabs have excellent performance for cleaning the end face of adapter or connector, and they can also be used in other equipment, such as a printer, computer, optical instrument camera lens, etc. The first two pictures are of a microscopic view of two recently cleaned connectors. After cleaning, the connectors were mated and unmated five times. The FTDU offers a safe solution for disposal of cleaved fiber ends, epoxy and syringes, and other sharp objects. This high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottle features a translucent lid with one circular and one rectangular hole in it (see the photo to the right). Both of these holes have individual covers that snap closed to keep the contents inside the unit. Tabs on the side of the lid hold the covers open for hands-free use. The two hole covers are connected by a plastic tab. Cut, or pull, the covers apart to use the holes separately.Place a drop of solvent (enough for a dime-sized spot) on the wipe, and then lightly draw in a straight line from the solvent over the dry wipe, removing the soils and drying the end face in one motion. The International Electrotechnical Commission states that contamination remaining on a plug’s end face has a tendency to migrate towards the core when mating, impeding light transmission (IEC/TR 62627-01, 2010, p. 8)
