About this deal

Malefic Defender is the add you want, despite what achievement text claims. 165k health means they're fragile. Plan accordingly. The premise was great. But the happenings in this book were jaw dropping in terms of having to suspend disbelief. I couldn't get deeply involved because I could not immerse myself likely because I always knew I was reading a book if that makes sense.

I'll admit, when I first read about "The Hottie List," and especially when I learned that only boys can vote for who get put on the list, I was incredibly frustrated by its sexist nature. No fear though! Kenzie was right along there with me. I loved that Kenzie was not one of the girls who worshiped the list and actually, when she finds out that she is ranked fifth, she dismisses the list as "obsolete, meaningless, and unbelievably immature." She also adds that list serves no other purpose than "sexualizing and stereotyping girls" (p. 13). When I read those lines, all I could think was "you go girl!" It was so refreshing to have a shrewd and level-headed female main character who is not afraid to go against popular trends. Since this book has its moments of high-school drama/shallow comments it was nice to have such a strong and intelligent MC.

As smart and level-headed as Kenzie was, she was also monumentally stupid. As hot-tempered and vocal as she was, she was also pretty passive. But… what happened on Mictlan Island stayed on Mictlan Island— for a price. Frank would pay that price, just to keep me quiet. And Desi—what about Hoyt, the coal-mining baron who’d passed off blue plastic as precious stones, who had told her that those giant shrimp in Newport News were baby lobsters? Did Desi want to break his heart? Did she want to keep this island liaison as much a secret as Frank?

Comment by GrummulthrusSince nobody is stating this, and you might start to wonder: Be very patient. Each attempt at this takes 12-15 minutes. We did this with 3 DPS, a Druid healer, and BrM tank (me, kiter). So, it can be solo healed. stars, rounded up to 4- this is one of the moments I wish GR rating system allowed us to give halves!I do love a new Tammy Cohen book and I have to admit that They All Fall Down did “somehow” manage to sneak its way up my topping TBR pile as I was just DYING to read it! And it definitely didn’t disappoint as I have to say I think it’s her best psychological thriller since Dying for Christmas! When Charlie, the person Hannah feels probably the closest in the clinic, commits suicide Hannah is shaken. Then another patient dies. Hannah becomes convinced that someone is murdering them. She shares her fears with her mum, who unwillingly becomes doing detective-work to see what’s going on. There was also an awful lot going on in this book. There is a cheating spouse, an estranged sister, a suspicious clinician with a murky past, an art therapist with a severely disabled mother and an undefined relationship with someone called Annabel. Add to this a camera crew filming at the psychiatric ward (one of whom is very intense and creepy), a dysfunctional family set up with Drew's ex-lover and that's before dealing with the two women who have died on the ward.

Our protagonist, Kenzie, was alright, nothing special. I mean I very much doubt she'd be someone you'd remember reading about in a month's time. She's fairly bland and sometimes annoying but nothing life changing about her. I found her best friend Molly annoying as hell. I know she wasn't supposed to be but I wanted to slap her - often! I would've been fine with the idea that a best friend didn't want to get left behind, completely legitimate. However, one minute she was whiny and insecure and the next she was the best friend a girl could ever have. The consistences of her character could've driven me to drink. Ugh. I'm convinced it is impossible to roll your eyes so much that they roll out of your head. Be sure to read this book if you want to test my hypothesis. I really enjoyed this book, it was a fun, fast read, but beware: suspension of disbelief is a major requirement to enjoy it.

I feel torn on this book. On the one hand, the book was stupid fun and mildly entertaining. On the other hand, most of the characters were idiots and the protagonist was extremely frustrating. This is a book when you must set aside your brain for awhile. I don't always feel like sitting down and analyzing a book to death. However, I couldn't look over one of the more cliche things I've read, which was "The Hottie List." I think a little more creativity could've went into that one. We've seen this a million times in a million different ways, give us something original PLEASE. I mean, I would've rolled my eyes at that even at 12 years old. The ending was okish but I really wish they would've thrown a big twist in there. I wanted to be taken by surprise but that did not happen. The author took a really predictable route when she could've done something fun with it.
