About this deal

After you are completely lice free, you will definitely want to stay that way. This kit comes with a small bottle of Preventative Rosemary Repel Conditioning Spray to keep lice away for good. Diols are alcohols that have two alcohol groups. Several compounds in this group are wetting and spreading agents used in cosmetics. They are all derived from plants such as coconut and a 1,2-octanediol, which has been developed for use against head lice. This is also believed to dissolve the waxy coating of head lice causing them to dehydrate. Head lice eggs ( nits) are firmly attached to the base of the hair. They may look like dandruff, but if you examine them with a magnifying glass, you can see that nits are oval-shaped and not flat.

Enzyme based products claim to be able to kill head lice and help remove head louse eggs from the hair. Most of these products claim to use protease enzymes, which help break down proteins. However, the outside cuticle of the head louse is made from chitin, which is carbohydrate based, thus protease enzymes would have no effect on it. The glue which holds the eggs to the hair strands does contain some protein but it is not susceptible to gentle enzymes and experiments have shown that it is easier to dissolve the hair than to break down the glue that holds the eggs in place! Consequently, it is unlikely that these products are effective other than as lubricants to help in the combing process and in cleaning other materials form the hair surface. Oral prescription drug. Ivermectin (Stromectol) is available by prescription as a tablet taken by mouth. The oral drug effectively treats lice with two doses, eight days apart. This drug is typically used when other treatments haven't been effective. Malathion is an organophosphate. The formulation of malathion approved in the United States for the treatment of head lice is a lotion that is safe and effective when used as directed. Malathion is pediculicidal (kills live lice) and partially ovicidal (kills some lice eggs). A second treatment is recommended if live lice still are present 7–9 days after treatment. Malathion is intended for use on persons 6 years of age and older. Malathion can be irritating to the skin. Malathion lotion is flammable; do not smoke or use electrical heat sources, including hair dryers, curlers, and curling or flat irons, when applying malathion lotion and while the hair is wet.

Step 6: Apply the Treatment as Directed

Spinosad is derived from soil bacteria. Spinosad topical suspension, 0.9%, was approved by the FDA in 2011. Since it kills live lice as well as unhatched eggs, retreatment is usually not needed. Nit combing is not required. Spinosad topical suspension is approved for the treatment of children 6 months of age and older. It is safe and effective when used as directed. Repeat treatment should be given only if live (crawling) lice are seen 7 days after the first treatment.

Enzyme disruption. Many monoterpenes can act against the enzymes used in normal body functions, especially those enzymes that cells use to take up food and oxygen. Some of the monoterpenes in the oils that help kill head lice disrupt these enzymes so the insect body systems stop functioning. Some pediculicides (medicines that kill lice) have an ovicidal effect (kill eggs). For pediculicides that are only weakly ovicidal or not ovicidal, routine retreatment is recommended. For those that are more strongly ovicidal, retreatment is recommended only if live (crawling) lice are still present several days after treatment (see recommendation for each medication). To be most effective, retreatment should occur after all eggs have hatched but before new eggs are produced. Write down questions to ask your health care provider. Your time with your provider is limited, so preparing a list of questions ahead of time will help you make the most of your time together. List your questions from most important to least important in case time runs out. The egg produces a nymph, which has a greyish-white color and goes through three stages before becoming an adult.

Everyone I tested this product on in my salon loved it because it smells amazing (like citrus and flowers) and it leaves the hair incredibly soft. The only downside is that some folks are allergic to the flowers used to make the product. If you have this kind of allergy, just remember that this shampoo is made with ingredients from flowering plants. Bowles, V. M., et al. (2019). Effect of a new head lice treatment, abametapir lotion, 0.74%, on louse eggs: A randomized, double-blind study.Coating your hair with mayonnaise may be non-toxic, but it probably isn’t effective (for anything other than smelling like a sandwich, anyway).
