About this deal

TCL's Android skin doesn't make any striking changes to the basic user interface, and you won't have any trouble navigating the phone’s menus or settings. One downside, however, is that the phone arrives with a bunch of preinstalled apps and bloatware (from both TCL and T-Mobile). You can't uninstall the majority of these apps, which is irritating. Built in Screen Protector: The clear screen protector with sensitive touch performance while prevent your phone from accidental scratches. Add a layer of protection for screen. No need to use any Tempered Glass or other protective film. Raised bezels help ensure touch screen to avoid scratches when placed face down

The Nebo note-taking app supports handwriting recognition, and it worked mostly fine in testing, though my handwriting isn't the easiest to decipher in general. MyScript Calculator is excellent; it solves handwritten math equations. The phone oddly seemed more capable of understanding poorly written numbers than words. It's not all bad, though. TCL's Nxtvision tool is a standout feature that enhances photos (contrast, sharpness, and detail), videos (color, contrast, and detail), and games (graphics). You can also turn on a reading mode, an eye comfort mode, a darker display mode, and a sunlight display mode. These options are all easy to toggle on or off.Although the built-in stylus might catch your attention, it’s not a compelling reason alone to buy the TCL Stylus 5G. Consider it a cool bonus, particularly if you like to scribble notes manually rather than typing on a glass keyboard. The Stylus 5G's 4,000mAh battery is slightly smaller than that of other smartphones in this price category. Sadly, the phone performed below expectations in our battery drain test. We streamed a YouTube video continuously over a Wi-Fi connection with audio playing through headphones and it lasted only six hours and 41 minutes. Compared with the Moto G Stylus 5G (13 hours and 10 minutes), this result is subpar at best. In the same test, the Galaxy A32 5G (13 hours, 1 minute) also lasted much longer than the TCL, firmly placing it behind the competition.

Benchmarks aside, the phone was snappy enough in everyday use. As long as you don’t plan on intense video editing or high-end gaming, the Stylus 5G should be able to handle your daily needs. Durability isn’t a strongpoint for this device. TCL says it has no IP rating of any kind, which means it is not protected from dust or water, nor does the phone include any type of special protective glass covering the display. If you’re concerned about durability, look for a phone that offers even a minimal IP rating and something with Gorilla Glass or Dragontrail Glass. For reference, the Moto G Stylus 5G has an IP52 rating, which means it's protected from light splashing. Samsung doesn't list a rating for the Galaxy A32.Keep your expectations low for gaming; the Stylus 5G underwhelms across the board. On the GFXBench Aztec Ruins OpenGL High Tier onscreen and offscreen tests, it achieved a frame rate of just 8.8fps and 2.5fps, respectively. This is where Motorola’s midrange model pulls ahead with scores of 12fps and 7.7fps. The main reason to consider the Stylus 5G, aside from the price, is its built-in stylus—it's right in the name, after all. The phone's stylus performs acceptably, but don't expect an experience on par with the Bluetooth-enabled S Pen of the flagship Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
